Selecting the right LED downlight is one of the most impactful decisions in any lighting scheme. The wrong choice leads to glare complaints, wasted energy, and expensive retrofits. The right choice delivers comfort, efficiency, and a space that feels exactly as intended.
Here is what matters when specifying LED downlights for commercial and residential projects.
Start with the Application
Every space demands different lighting characteristics. A hotel lobby needs warm, inviting light with low glare. An office needs bright, uniform illumination that reduces eye strain over long working hours. A retail space needs high CRI to make products look their best.
Define the application first. Then work backwards to the technical specification.
CRI: Why 80 is Not Always Enough
Colour Rendering Index measures how accurately a light source reveals the true colours of objects. CRI 80 is the industry baseline for commercial interiors. It handles corridors, storage, and utility areas well.
For hospitality, retail, and residential spaces, CRI 90+ makes a measurable difference. Skin tones look natural. Food looks appetising. Fabrics and finishes show their true colours. The additional cost per fitting is minimal compared to the overall project budget.
Beam Angle Selection
Beam angle determines how light spreads from the fitting. Narrow beams (15 to 24 degrees) create focused pools of light. They work for accent lighting, highlighting artwork, or drawing attention to retail displays.
Medium beams (36 to 40 degrees) suit general ambient lighting. They provide a good balance between coverage and definition.
Wide beams (60 degrees and above) fill a space with even, diffuse light. They reduce the number of fittings needed but sacrifice contrast and visual interest.
For ceiling heights above 3 metres, narrow and medium beams perform better. For standard 2.4 to 2.7 metre ceilings, medium and wide beams deliver comfortable results.
Glare Control: UGR Ratings Explained
Unified Glare Rating quantifies visual discomfort from bright light sources. Lower numbers mean less glare. UGR 19 is the maximum recommended for office environments under EN 12464-1. UGR 22 is acceptable for corridors and circulation areas.
Achieving low UGR requires recessed optics, quality reflectors, and proper spacing. Cheap downlights with exposed LED chips will produce high glare regardless of their claimed specifications.
Dimming Compatibility
Modern projects demand flexible lighting control. DALI2 is the industry standard for commercial installations. It provides individual addressability, scene setting, and integration with building management systems.
Phase dimming (leading edge or trailing edge) works for simpler residential projects. Always confirm compatibility between the driver and the dimmer before specifying. Mismatches cause flickering, buzzing, and premature failure.
IP Rating for Wet Areas
IP20 is standard for dry interior locations. Bathrooms, kitchens, and swimming pools need IP44 or IP65 rated fittings. The rating must apply to the complete fitting, not individual components.
Zone regulations vary by country. In the UK, BS 7671 defines bathroom zones. Zone 1 requires minimum IP44. Zone 2 requires minimum IP44. Outside zones, standard IP20 fittings are acceptable.
Energy Efficiency: Lumens per Watt
The efficiency of an LED downlight is measured in lumens per watt (lm/W). Current best-in-class fittings achieve 120 to 140 lm/W. Budget fittings typically deliver 80 to 100 lm/W.
Higher efficacy means fewer fittings, smaller cable sizes, and lower running costs. Over a 10-year lifecycle, the energy savings from premium fittings far exceed the upfront cost difference.
Making the Final Decision
Start with application requirements. Match the CRI, beam angle, and UGR to the space. Confirm dimming compatibility with the control system. Check the IP rating against the installation environment. Then compare efficacy and total cost of ownership.
