Linear LED Lighting: Recessed, Surface, and Suspended Options Compared

Linear LED luminaires dominate modern commercial interiors. They deliver uniform illumination across large floor plates, integrate cleanly with ceiling systems, and offer the best lumen-per-watt efficiency of any fitting type. But "linear" covers a wide range of products, mounting methods, and optical configurations. Choosing the right one depends on your ceiling type, desired aesthetic, and lighting performance targets.

Recessed Linear

Recessed linear fittings sit flush with the ceiling plane. They create the cleanest visual result, with the luminaire becoming part of the architecture rather than an applied element. This is the default choice for suspended grid ceilings (600x600mm or 600x1200mm tiles) and plasterboard ceilings with planned apertures.

Installation requires ceiling void access and precise cut-outs. For grid ceilings, standard 600mm or 1200mm modules drop into the T-bar grid directly. For plasterboard, you need a pre-cut slot with appropriate mounting brackets. Recessed linears work best when planned early in the project, not retrofitted.

Optical options include direct (downward only), direct/indirect (up and down), and asymmetric (wall wash). Direct is most common for general office lighting. Direct/indirect adds a soft ceiling wash that reduces contrast and improves visual comfort, typically achieving UGR<16.

Surface Mounted Linear

Surface mount linears fix directly to the ceiling face. They project below the ceiling by 40-80mm depending on the profile. This makes them suitable for solid ceilings (concrete soffits, plasterboard without void space) and retrofit projects where cutting into the ceiling is impractical.

Installation is faster than recessed. Mount the track or bracket, clip in the luminaire, and wire. Most surface linears use a simple rail system that allows continuous runs without visible joints. End caps and corner connectors create clean terminations and turns.

Surface mount works well in industrial, retail, and educational settings where a utilitarian aesthetic is acceptable. In high-end commercial spaces, the profile sitting below the ceiling can feel less refined than recessed alternatives. Choose slim profiles (under 50mm depth) to minimise visual bulk.

Suspended Linear

Suspended linears hang from the ceiling on cables or rods, typically 200-500mm below the ceiling plane. This is the most versatile mounting method and the strongest design statement. The luminaire becomes a visible architectural element, defining zones and adding character to the space.

Suspended mounting enables true direct/indirect lighting. With the fitting hanging in open air, light radiates both downward onto the work plane and upward onto the ceiling. This creates the most comfortable visual environment with the lowest glare, making it the preferred choice for high-specification offices and creative workspaces.

Cable suspension systems allow height adjustment during commissioning. This is useful for tuning the direct/indirect ratio and achieving the target lux levels. Rod suspension gives a more architectural look but is less adjustable.

Continuous runs of suspended linear create strong visual lines that can guide circulation, define open-plan zones, or emphasise architectural geometry. L-connectors, T-connectors, and X-connectors allow complex layouts.

Key Specifications to Compare

Luminous efficacy (lm/W). Modern linear LEDs range from 100-160 lm/W. Higher efficacy means lower running costs and smaller electrical loads. For large commercial fit-outs, the energy savings over 10-15 years are substantial.

Lumen output per metre. Typically 2,000-6,000 lm/m depending on the application. Office general lighting needs around 3,000-4,000 lm/m at standard mounting heights. Retail may need 5,000+ lm/m for higher lux levels.

Colour consistency. In continuous runs, colour variation between modules is visible and jarring. Specify fittings with tight MacAdam ellipse binning (3-step SDCM or better) and consistent CRI across the run.

Joining and alignment. How do modules connect? Is there a visible gap or a seamless light line? The best systems use optical connectors that maintain the light line through the joint. Check this in a mockup before committing to a full order.

Emergency integration. For commercial projects, a proportion of fittings need emergency batteries. Self-contained emergency modules that fit within the linear profile save the cost and complexity of separate emergency fittings.

Choosing the Right Option

Match the mounting method to your ceiling and budget. Recessed for clean, minimal aesthetics in new-build or major refurbishment. Surface for retrofits and practical environments. Suspended for design-led spaces where the fitting adds to the architecture.
